Hormone Replacement Can Help Menopausal Women Improve Their Sex Life

Hormone Replacement Therapy can help alleviate the sexual health issues that are faced by menopausal and in perimenopause women.

Women expect to face the symptoms such as night sweats and hot flashes that come with waning hormone levels as they approach and enter menopause. However, they may not expect to experience the lack of libido, vaginal dryness, and other sexual health issues that accompany menopause.

In fact, hormonal changes affecting your sex life may very well be the most impactful symptom of the so-called “change of life.”

In her book “Sexually Woke,” gynecologist and medical researcher Susan Hardwick-Smith, MD, studied over 1,000 women between the ages of 40 and 65, 715 of whom identified as perimenopausal or menopausal. Smith wrote, “The single most prevalent adverse symptom of their changing hormones was a decrease in sex drive (51 percent).”

Here are Smith’s five tips on how women can cope with the inevitable sexual issues that occur during perimenopause and menopause.

  1. Change is inevitable, so embrace it

As we enter into perimenopause and menopause, and especially if we’ve had children, our bodies and sexual anatomy change, and we have to accept those changes in order to move forward. What used to feel good sexually might not anymore, and that’s okay.

  1. There is freedom in sex after menopause

Starting in our teen years, our libido is driven by hormones and the biological reality of our fertility. During fertile years, pressure can come with penetrative vaginal sex to either get pregnant or prevent pregnancy, so with the transition out of that fertile window comes a sense of freedom from those underlying pressures. That freedom alone may give way to better sex!

  1. Love yourself, and let go of resentment

Smith says that a key finding in her research about women in midlife with vibrant sex lives is that they all seem quite comfortable and familiar with their bodies. They know what they like and don’t like when it comes to sex. She says that if you haven’t yet, perimenopause is an ideal time in your life to get to know your body—or even get to know it better.

  1. Focus on connections other than sex with your partner

Smith says that women entering menopause who are lucky enough to be in a stable relationship should focus on other things beyond the sexual act that bring couples closer and keep them together. She says instead of focusing on intercourse, prioritize connecting with and being intentional with your partner. Small, daily moments of presence, attention, and recognition can keep the passion for one another alive and also shows that you care. Commit to giving your partner your full attention because healthy communication stands to increase desire in your physical relationship.

  1. Hormone replacement therapy could improve your sex life

Bioidentical hormones (estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone) can be a safe and effective way to treat perimenopause and symptoms of menopause, and hormone replacement therapy is a great option for reducing symptoms in many women that may boost their libido as well.

That last tip is perhaps the most important. We have seen in our practice on a regular basis how our bioidentical hormone replacement treatment for menopause improves sexual desire and sexual performance in our female patients.

Bioidentical Replacement Hormone Therapy for Menopause

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has become the preferred treatment for women who are suffering from the symptoms of menopause. Bioidentical hormones are still approved for use by the FDA, even though they are usually made by compounding pharmacists. You still need to have a doctor’s prescription for Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and you still need to be carefully monitored over the course of your therapy.

Bioidentical hormones may be delivered in several forms depending on your needs and lifestyle. In addition to injections, creams, patches, pills, gels, and pellets are among the other delivery methods of bioidentical hormones.

Which bioidentical hormones you are prescribed depends on how low your hormones are, what stage of menopause you are in, and of course, how you are feeling and the nature of the symptoms you are experiencing.

You may need a prescription for bioidentical progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, growth hormone, or any combination thereof.

If you are between the ages of 35-55, look for these signs and symptoms of your hormone levels being low or out of balance:

  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Depression and mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of muscle tone
  • Insomnia and/or disturbed sleep patterns
  • Night sweats (women)
  • Hot flashes (women)
  • Erectile Dysfunction (men)

The only way to know if you qualify for bioidentical hormone therapy is through a series of specific diagnostic tests.

If your level of testosterone, growth hormone or other critical age-related hormones are determined to be sub-optimal or otherwise imbalanced, you may meet the criteria for bioidentical hormone therapy.
