Large-Scale British Study Finds no Link Between HRT and Dementia

Bioidentical Hormones West Palm Beach FLAre you one of the women’s looking for bioidentical hormones?

A new study has found that hormone replacement therapy does not increase the risk of developing dementia in menopausal and perimenopausal women.

As reported by CNN, the study conducted in the UK and published in the BMJ concluded that – for the most part, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not linked with an increased risk of developing dementia.

This was a very large study. Using UK medical records, the researchers involved in the new study identified 118,501 women aged 55 and over who were diagnosed with dementia between 1998 and 2020. A control group consisted of 497,416 women matched by age and by the same medical practice who had no records of dementia.

Of the women with a dementia diagnosis, they found that 16,291 — 14% — had used HRT. The same percentage of women in the control group, or 68,726 of them, also used the treatment.

Thus it could be concluded that – while such a link has been suggested in the past – this large-scale trial showed no significantly increased risk of dementia in women who used hormone replacement as opposed to women who did not.

According to the study, overall, there were no increased risks of developing dementia associated with menopausal hormone therapy “regardless of hormone type, application, dose, or duration of treatment.”

Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

It is always good news when we find out more about the safety and effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy to treat menopause. If you really want to be sure that the benefits of your HRT outweigh any potential side effects or risks, you always want to choose bioidentical hormones.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has become the preferred treatment for men and women who are suffering from the symptom of age-related hormone decline.

Bioidentical hormones may be delivered in several forms depending on your needs and lifestyle. Which bioidentical hormones you are prescribed depends on how old you are, if you are a man or a woman, of course, how you are feeling, and what problems you are experiencing.

You may need a prescription for bioidentical progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, growth hormone, or any combination thereof.

If you are between the ages of 35-55, look for these signs and symptoms of your hormone levels being low or out of balance:

  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Depression and mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of muscle tone
  • Insomnia and/or disturbed sleep patterns
  • Night sweats (women)
  • Hot flashes (women)
  • Erectile Dysfunction (men)

The only way to know if you qualify for bioidentical hormone therapy is through a series of specific diagnostic tests.

If your level of testosterone, growth hormone or other critical age-related hormones is determined to be sub-optimal or otherwise imbalanced, you may meet the criteria for bioidentical hormone therapy.

Bioidentical Replacement Hormone Therapy for Menopause

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has become the preferred treatment for women who are suffering from the symptoms of menopause. Bioidentical hormones are still approved for use by the FDA, even though they are usually made by compounding pharmacists.

You still need to have a doctor’s prescription for Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and you still need to be carefully monitored over the course of your therapy. Bioidentical hormones may be delivered in several forms depending on your needs and lifestyle.

In addition to injections, creams, patches, pills, gels, and pellets are among the other delivery methods of bioidentical hormones. Which bioidentical hormones you are prescribed depends on how low your hormones are, what stage of menopause you are in, and of course, how you are feeling and the nature of the symptoms you are experiencing.

You may need a prescription for bioidentical progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, growth hormone, or any combination thereof.
