Drug Maker Gets Go-Ahead for New HGH Injections

HGH Therapy West Palm Beach A new type of human growth hormone replacement injections moves forward into the next phase of trials in Europe.

Novo Nordisk, manufacturers of one of the most commonly prescribed human growth hormone brands (HGH) for adult-onset growth hormone deficiency, Norditropin®, has announced that a new once-weekly HGH injection is moving one step closer to market.

Novo Nordisk announced recently that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), under the European Medicines Agency (EMA), adopted a positive opinion for the use of Sogroya®, recommending marketing authorization for the treatment of adults with growth hormone deficiency (AGHD).

The CHMP recommends once-weekly Sogroya® to be authorized for the replacement of growth hormone in adults with adult-onset or “age-related” growth hormone deficiency. The new drug is a long-acting human growth hormone therapy taken once a week by injection under the skin, as opposed to most current HGH injections taken daily.

“We are very pleased with the positive opinion for once-weekly Sogroya® as we are committed to continuously developing innovative and efficient medicines for people living with a growth hormone deficiency,” said Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, executive vice president, and chief scientific officer of Novo Nordisk.

“We are confident that Sogroya® will make the management of this serious chronic disease easier and help improve the quality of life for more people living with growth hormone deficiency.”

Another phase 3 trial is ongoing, investigating the efficacy and safety of the once-weekly drug in children living with a growth hormone deficiency. Still, it seems like there will soon be a weekly option for patients with adult-onset growth hormone deficiency.

What is Age-Related or Adult-Onset Growth Hormone Deficiency?

Growth hormone is a vital hormone produced by your pituitary gland. In children, growth hormone, or HGH, is primarily responsible for activating or regulating all of the processes that allow a child to grow into a healthy adult. In adults, HGH still plays a vital role in your:

  • Ability to build muscle
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Sexual Health
  • Bone health
  • Fat metabolism

Adults who are experiencing age-related growth hormone decline will suffer from quality-of-life issues related to all of the above biological processes. Any disease or injury that impacts the pituitary gland could lead to adult-onset growth hormone deficiency.

However, the primary cause of “adult-onset” or “age-related” growth hormone deficiency is the normal drop-in HGH that occurs as we age. Despite its continued need, once you exit your teen years, your HGH levels start to decline steadily.

It is this drop in HGH levels that occur as men and women age that is usually responsible for GHD in adults. Growth hormone replacement injections such as Sogroya® are used to treat adults suffering from growth hormone deficiency effectively.
